Maggie Sweeney, MA, LPC

Maggie is a Licensed Professional Counselor who is passionate about providing a counseling experience that goes beyond worksheets to create space to start exploring your deeper feelings and experiences. Her areas of focus include women’s mental health, trauma, chronic suicidality, and providing support when life just feels hard.

Maggie specializes in exploring how feelings of shame can impact our daily experiences and influence how we view and relate to ourselves and others. Shame, the insidious feeling of “I feel bad because I am bad” or “something went wrong and I’m to blame”, is often based out of trauma and pain. Maggie works to bring awareness to how it might be impacting you and your mental health symptoms, how to challenge it, and how to grow beyond always feeling like you did something wrong.

Maggie often brings humor and moments of lightheartedness to the therapeutic process to create an environment where you feel seen, supported, and able to sustain the hard work. You are more than just your pain and past experiences. In therapy, you should have space to express all aspects of who you are.

My Story

Beyond counseling, Maggie is passionate about suicide prevention and has experience in administering suicide prevention training for both community members and other health care providers. She believes that suicide prevention goes beyond the important step of asking someone if they are suicidal, and emphasizes the importance of connection, community, and fostering relationships where a person feels like they matter are seen in their pain. She is a certified QPR and ASMR trainer and provides training throughout the state of Michigan. Maggie also offers custom suicide prevention trainings that can be tailored to address specific areas of need and growth. She has presented at various conferences nationally on suicide prevention and Zero Suicide.

Prior to becoming an LPC, Maggie worked in Residence Life at Interlochen Arts Academy and Western Michigan University. It is through her work in residence life that Maggie found her passion for connecting with individuals through a relational-based approach that almost always includes humor. She has always loved hearing stories and trying to understand an individual’s experience.

Outside of counseling, Maggie is passionate about food, music, and the arts. She moonlights as a backgammon player and has placed in both national and international tournaments. She finds backgammon to be a beautiful analogy to life – you often have to make the best choice you can based on what you know in the moment and sometimes accept a less than perfect outcome. This requires both radical acceptance of where you’re at and a radical push for change. Plus, she loves trophies.
